TOP 5 DISCOUNT E-STORES

To discount shop or not to discount shop, that is the question.......

When discount sites first launched, I wasn't sure if they were going to be akin to huge discount warehouses with too much unattractive stock and very very low prices. Basically a poor shopping experience with average quality items that most of us would never have bought under normal circumstances.

But overtime a number of quality discount e-stores have launched that offer genuine great discounts on leading brands. You can find sites that specialise in luxury brands and others that focus on everyday contemporary products. Some of them are member driven sites and others are open to anyone....

The trick is finding the right discount site that suits your shopping style.

Five guidelines from shopper Concierge on shopping the right discount e-stores:

  • Find the discount e-store that sells the brands and style that you like .... some are cheap but conversely others are high end luxury brands . Check the range of sales before signing up, make sure they sell products you would actually buy.
  • Review their communication style, some fill your inbox with clutter that you never read other show you content that you are actually interested in.
  • To get the best from the site, shop as soon as the offer is live, the popular sizes often go quickly leaving you feeling that you always miss out. Check what time the sales start each day, and review the upcoming sales before they go live
  • Don't buy something you don't need, later it will only make you feel like you wasted your money
  • Check the refund policy... because of the discount some don't offer great returns

Shopper Concierge recommends you check out our five favourite discount e-stores:

The luxury discount store, The Outnet is sale outlet of the infamous Net-a-porter luxury retailer. They offer up to 70% off items and you can get a great deal. The prices are still not cheap but if Net-a-porter is slightly out of reach, The Outlet can make it slightly in reach. They offer the same high quality service as Net-a-porter and they have maintain a premium feel to the shopping experience. One challenge is that the popular sizes run out really quickly so you need to shop the site regularly to get the best deals as they don't tell you in advance what is coming up.

Temple & Webster is a discount home wares site, and the best thing about this members only sale outlet is that they have delivered a truly premium experience so that you don't even feel like you are in a discount site. The claim to want to inspire their customers and we definitely agree that they achieve this. They range mostly boutique home wares brands at great prices. They are not the bottom of the barrel in pricing but rather a good discount on a high quality product. They get the communication style right and we highly recommend becoming a member if you are refurbishing the house. A word of warning,  some of the items are so beautiful you may end up buying things you don't need.
temple and webster

HauteLook is the Discount Fashion e-store aligned with the Nordstrom department store in the US. On any given day they have a huge number of sales across Womens, Mens, Kids, Home and Beauty. They range well known and not so well known contemporary brands and therefore have a much cheaper price point that The Outnet. It is a members only site as well with the daily email which tells what will go on sale the next day, which helps you avoid missing out on something you really want. Sales start at 8am Pacific time which is again a huge benefit as many international sites work on the northern hemisphere timing meaning that Australians often get the sale last. Make sure you check the shipping cost on this one.

This is the one of the original discount e-shops to launch in Australia and now has been going a number of years and has developed a lot since launch. They  offer you $10 off when joining to incentivise you to get shopping straight away. Inviting your friends to join gets you more money off. They offer Women's, mens, kids and living contemporary brands at very reasonable prices. They also have an "outlet" section which is the serious cheap clearing house for all types of products from dishwashing liquid to dresses for those who are very focused on price.

When you go to this site you will immediately be struck with offers galore... nothing over $25 or 48 hour sale frenzy. It is all about price, which will suit those looking for a red hot bargain across the categories of womens, mens, kids, beauty, home & Living. You get $20 off for inviting a friend. Where the other sites create a premium shopping experience this site feels like you are walking into the boxing day sale at Myers.... chaotic, like sales are. This is all OK if you want to shop a serious sale with low low prices. You can become a VIP member of the site for $100 a year and shop sales earlier than anyone else, as well as getting access to additional exclusives. The site is also available in chinese
oz sale
So different strokes depending on what you are looking for, we hope one of them takes your fancy

American Apparel for fun , bright, casual wear

and

Georg Jensen for Homewares ( yes they have more than Jewellery!)

American Apparel

The 100% made in USA, American Apparel brand, is well worth checking out if you are looking for hip clothing that is young, fun and bright.

Shopping Online Department Stores

Shopping Online US Luxury Department Stores :
shopping
US department stores through the 80's, 90's and 00's grew to legendary status amongst Australian shoppers as mythical places to shop, the huge range combined with low prices which would see jam packed suitcases on returning from holidays or business trips to America full of shopping bargins.

In todays online shopping environment no longer do you need to travel for 14 hours on a plane to shop some of the US's leading department stores , today the majority of US department stores ship to Australia bringing the diverse range and low prices right to our door step.

So how do the legendary US department stores deliver within the shopping online environment:

First range,  all the US department stores have done a great job at transferring their huge range offering into the online environment. Both the depth and width of the ranges are extensive and can leave you browsing for hours within the comfort of your home.  The standard of online stores across all the major department sites is good, the large ranges are easily displayed with good product information, and you are immediately made aware of the new offers available on the home page.

Secondly the prices are VERY reasonable. All of the them have a permanent sale section within the e-store which makes the already low prices even lower. All stores price the items in Australian dollars which eliminates any exchange rate confusion when identifying a bargin.... and there are some great bargins to be found!
So whats the catch? other than differences in range and designers (which is a matter of taste), how do you decide which is the best one to shop?

The answer : Shipping.... the cost and the speed.

While the items may be cheap, unless the site has a set shipping price or free shipping, the cost of getting it to Australia can be ridiculous . As an example a Maxi dress for sale at Nordstrom for $45 had a shipping cost of $37.80 making shipping 45% of the overall cost - absolutely ridiculous, whats the point?  So our recommendation before you shop is to compare shipping policies.
In reviewing each of the retailers  all have a different approach to the price of shipping , some are offering great deals and others aren't, so before you fall in love with an item doing your research, shop around for the best shipping deal. A word of caution, the shipping deals are sometimes permanent and others only for a short time, so check each time you shop their e-store.

The top 5 US Department e-Stores:

Neiman Marcus
1. Neiman Marcus : A luxury department store with an amazing range of high end designers. Neiman Marcus have the best of the shipping at present with Free shipping to Australia for orders over $100...... However there is a caveat on this, some items they simply don't ship to Australia. It is unclear how they decide what can be sold to Australia and what not, but we tested items in Shoes, Clothes and Cosmetics and it was random as to what would be shipped and what wouldn't. It seemed like a lot of products could not be shipped! Definitely a negative for shopping this site even if the shipping rate is great.

2. Bloomingdales : all the latest fashion comes in next with a flat shipping fee of $9.95 for those that spend over $100. Shipping estimated at 6-11 business days. http://shopperconcierge.com/bloomingdales-fashion-homewares
bloomingdales

3. Saks Fifth Ave : An institution.... flat shipping for orders over $100. Note this rate is being flagged as a special offer for a limited time , so not their normal deal. Delivery 5-7 Business Days to Australia, the shortest window amongst all the stores. http://shopperconcierge.com/saks-fifth-avenue-fashion/

4.Macys : The young and fun Macys which has no shipping deal and shipping rates are calculated based on your purchase , can be expensive. Delivery in 4 -13 Days. http://shopperconcierge.com/macys-fashion-homewares/

5. Nordstrom : The beacon of style, like Macys has no shipping deal with rates fluctuating depending on your purchase. Claim shipping will take 5-13 Days. http://shopperconcierge.com/nordstrom-fashion-homewares/

It would be amiss not to mention the famous Berdorf Goodman as part of this review, my personal favourite of all the department stores, sadly is trailing behind all of the above and is yet to ship out side of Canada and the US..... wake up and smell the roses guys, we have wallets ready for spending here in OZ!

Shopping US department stores, nolonger a plane ride away but simply at your finger tips.

As usual we love hearing your stories, good or bad so let us know how you go

Talking about Karen Walker Sunglasses......

karen walker fashion

NEW STORE ALERT : Karen Walker Eyewear & Fashion:

Most of us know Karen Walker’s collections are stylish and unpretentious. But most of the time you come across a couple of pieces from the range as part of an online boutique. So if you really wanted to explore her full range the best way to do that is to shop her direct.
While Karenwalker.com is an NZ site is has free shipping to Australia for purchases over $200 , under this amount costs you $25 … a hefty fee in todays online shopping environment.
eyewear
The site feels like an online magazine with a shopping section bolted on, which doesn’t fill you with immediate confidence in shopping the site.  However once you enter the shopping section the full range of Karen Walker eyewear, fashion , Jewellery and accessories is in front of you, which is the benefit of shopping this site. There is the complete range of eyewear, all 44 of her best and most unique designs. Within the Jewellery category all 6 ranges are featured and on the Fashion side you can shop her latest runway collection
fashion
Product photography is clear and inviting but be prepared , there is little product information on the site.

SHOPPER CONCIERGE TOP 7 SITES FOR JEANS

With the change of seasons upon us one of the key items to update in the wardrobe is your jeans. Picking the right style of jeans for your body shape is critical, so before you do anything on the purchasing side we recommend a full analysis of what has worked and what hasn't in the jeans you have now. There is no point buying the latest style if it doesn't make you look fantastic and lets face it every model who has ever advertised a pair of jeans  are clones of Mr & Mrs Pitt.

Some Q's : Finding the Perfect Jean:

1. What part of you body is your best asset : pick a cut that focuses on that part of your body.  If you have long legs skinny fit will work , if you have a nice curved derrière then a curvy cut jean ( rather than a straight boy cut) will work. Draw attention to the good parts.

2. What part of your body do you want to provide some camoflauge for ( and lets face it everyone has one) ? Best avoid a cut that draws the eye straight to it. No point buying low cut jeans if you have a pear shape figure as you will spend your whole time looking for ways to cover the muffin top you have created. Go for a higher cut jean that pulls you in a the waist. Pick a style that doesn't draw attention to parts you want to hide

3. Know what fabric you like : some jean fabrics are stiff and keep a very straight look and others are softer and mold to your shape more. Know which one you are looking for

4. When looking online, analyse the style of the jean : Although the person modelling the jean will look nothing like 99% of us, we can still learn a lot from the picture. Which bits of the models body does this particular style highlight ? For example is it tight around the thighs? Is this what we want to highlight or hide in our own body?

Take your time looking online and review mutiple cuts and brands. Often you will find a brand of jeans that just work and you end up sticking to them.

Our top 7 Sites for jeans:

1. April 77 : A great brand of jeans who have a very easy to shop online store that ships to Oz. Whilst mostly a mens label, their own site has a good range of women's jeans, and overall buying direct is cheaper. http://shopperconcierge.com/april-77-jeans/
jeans

2. Farfetch.com: A boutique that has a number of indie labels, check out their denim section. Whilst a smaller range (and women only) you can sorted based on cut which is really helpful. http://shopperconcierge.com/farfetch-fashion/

3.Ksubi : Indie brand always with the latest style. You can shop them direct and they have a good size range for both guys and girls. http://shopperconcierge.com/kusbi-jeans-fashion/
