Last week at www.shopperconcierge.com we test drove buying running shoes online . We challenged ourselves with the question........ can you successfully buy running shoes at an E store, without the face to face assistance of an expert and the ability to try them on?
While we believe at Shopper Concierge that EVERYTHING can be successfully purchased online we acknowledge that some categories are harder than others, and Running Shoes is one of those categories! To date I have only bought running shoes in person and while I have a preference for Nike I have no idea which shoe to purchase.
So this challenge starts with identifying the right running shoe for my foot, something that is critical to the successful purchase. I decided to shop at www.rebelsport.com.au as they are a well known brand and therefore I assumed a large range with lots of information to assist with the decision making process.
Rebel Sport have at least 45 pairs of womens running shoes to chose from across a number of brands. So good range ( tick) but where do you start? Well they give you no assistance on this front. I started looking randomly at running shoes at different brands and from what I could deduce there seems to be three different types of shoe: Neutral, Stability and Motion Control. Firstly, Rebel Sport ( along with the majority of other sites) do not group running shoes into these categories so basically you need to click on each shoe to determine what style it is. Secondly they don't provide any information how you decide which shoe style suits what type of foot or even how to determine what type of foot you have. I find this a major lost opportunity. I think the majority of people would stop here, put it in the hard basket and go into a store ( which may or may not be Rebel Sport). I however decided to push ahead with the challenge.
I ended up seeking guidance from a number of excellent blogs, which show you how to work out your shape of foot ( through a wet foot test in the shower) and then show you which shoe to choose. One of the best was:
http://www.runnersworld.co.uk/shoes/choosing-a-shoe-the-very-basics/481.html
After reviewing this information it was very clear to me which style of shoe to purchase and back to the Rebel Sport site I went armed with information quite frankly they could have provided me with in the first place.
I then needed to pick the right brand and shoe within the range, again for this I had to leave the site and seek advice from a number of blogs. I ended up deciding on the Nike Dual Fusion running shoe
http://www.rebelsport.com.au/eng/product/nike-dual-fusion-womens-running-shoes/0102004510021.
I decided to place an order ..... so what was my experience like with Rebel Sport?
it took 3 attempts to place the order as the site kept crashing.
I did get an email with a link to tracking information immediately following the purchase ( Good Stuff)
But the tracking info is basic. It is now 8 days since I order the shoes and they have not arrived? The tracking information has indicated they have been "shipped" since 5 days ago but doesn't indicate anything further than that - not helpful in anyway
I emailed Rebel Sport asking about my shoes 12 hours ago but have not had a response- not even an acknowledgement email.
So what is the upshot of all of this? Running Shoes are a difficult category to buy online BUT Rebel Sport ( and other retailers) do nothing to simplify the process. Thank God for informed bloggers sharing their experiences! But as I
still don't have my shoes or have any idea where they are after 8 days, forget supplying me with product information, I would just like Rebel Sport to get the basics right : Shipping and delivery.

When the E store is a letdown !
This weekend I did something that I almost never do...... go into a physical store! Although I am firmly of the belief that EVERYTHING in life can be bought successfully online, I suddenly found myself taking a stroll with my newborn and ending up in a traditional shop front. And for the first time in over a year I actually bought clothing in a bricks and mortar outlet - shock horror!
As a slight digression from my main topic.... One of the most important rules to buying clothes online is know your body and therefore always buy styles that suit your real body shape ( versus the one you imagine). Well 3 weeks post baby - I have a changing body shape so cant hurt to try things on at the moment.
Back to the story. Other than the item that I bought ( a fabulous leather dress) I also liked another piece of clothing that I decided to think about over night. As part of my deliberations on whether to buy or not to buy I decided to check out the item at their E Store ...... and this is where my rant begins..... the item from their new collection currently under investigation is not available at the E store ????
Why I ask, would you make your instore collection better than what is available on line? There are 5 things at really irritate me about this:
1. Inconvenience : I now have to pack up my newborn and actually go back to the store to buy the item ( when do I have time for this?)
2. I am limited to the sizes left in that particular store - what if they have now sold out?
3. I have to deal with an annoying sales assistant ( in this case talking about my flabby post baby body)
4. I have to deal with the general public also shopping in the store.
5. I have to physically carry my item all the way home hoping that baby spew or poop doesn't get on it ( OK this one I can probably manage - but I needed a 5th item)
My message to all stores - I want to see a BETTER range on line than in store. And if this had been the case then I am sure I would have already bought this item rather than ongoing deliberation that may or may not take me back to the bricks and mortar .
Museum Clothing - Love the Range, very happy with the price, hugely disappointed that I cant buy it online. For this and other reviews of online sites check out www.shopperconcierge.com

THE OUTNET : FAVOURITE SITE THIS WEEK
We shopped an oldie but a good this week : TheOutnet.com , and the experience reminded me of just how good the site is.
If you have never shopped Theoutnet.com let me take you through why we love it so much:
1. HUGE DISCOUNTS: theoutnet sells designer labels at massive discounts, making the unaffordable ( almost!) affordable. Over the years I have bought a number of pieces ( dresses, shoes and bags) all at significant discounts which made it possible for me to actually buy them
2. QUICK SHIPMENT: I am a stickler for quick delivery, and theoutnet delivers in 4 days to Australia from the UK. Place your order Monday and it will be here by the weekend. While I admit that this is slower than many local Australian sites I still think it is not bad.
3. GREAT RETURNS POLICY : Easy return envelop inside the box, just try it on and if it doesn't work call DHL back and they come to get it - easy as pie
4. AMAZING RANGE: They have all the top designers. They don't just have one or two and the rest are filler, they really have all of them ( mainly because their sister site is Net-a-porter - another one of my favs!
5. THEY DON'T FEEL LIKE A DISCOUNT OUTLET: you never feel like you are shopping a sale site, they feel premium right through the experience and they don't harass you to re - shop
So what are the watch outs to shopping this site:
a. YOU NEED TO BE A REGULAR: sizes do go quickly so you need to check out the range frequently , the more popular sizes do go quickly
b. NO MENS RANGE : My hubby always complains about this!
Next time you need something special , check out theoutnet.com

Fair Go to Australian Stores Online
We love Australian online sites. In fact 80% of the 1500 Shopper Concierge sites are Australian. So it upsets us to see that Australia Post wants to put Australian Sites further behind their international counterparts with their price increases on delivery !
http://www.smh.com.au/business/australia-post-faces-backlash-over-increased-delivery-charges-20130408-2hglc.html
Australian online shopping sites offer a huge range of product across every category imaginable. And one of the best features of Australia sites is the speed of delivery !
